Ye Olde Dominion

Shit, as much as I’m in front of a computer, you’d think I’d get to this more often.

So yeah, back in Virginia — specifically, Richmond (one of the few parts of Virginia I didn’t live in growing up). The stint in Virginia Beach ended up lasting about two months. Now that we’re in the new house, we still have plenty of unpacking and crap to do,  but the downstairs is baby-proofed, the kitchen is unpacked, and there’s a nice speedy fiber internet connection for my work VPN, so things are getting there. It’s slow going since our unpacking time usually consists of the kids’ nap time on weekends and a sliver of time after they go to bed at night.

Virginia Bound

It’s official, we’ll be moving from Seattle, WA to Virginia later this month.

On the work front, the company I work for is allowing me to telecommute, which is very cool on their part. I’ll be the only full time employee they have working from home (and over 2,500 miles away), so this should be an interesting learning experience for all involved. My current role is development manager, but in this company’s environment so much of that role involves face time (both within and outside of the department) that I think I’d have a hard time doing it well remotely. Instead, I’ll be switching into more of an architect role with the move. We’ve got some interesting stuff coming up in the next few months, so I’m pretty excited to be able to get down and dirty with the code and architecture again.

In the meantime my wife and I get to move across the country with toddling twins and a cat, staying with family in Virginia Beach while we try to find a house in Richmond. It looks to be a very stressful few months ahead.

bare essentials

Site stuff — Chad on July 21, 2008 @ 8:00 am

So…I went ahead and threw up a fresh WordPress install, along with the minimalistic barecity theme, to get things started. I guess we’ll see if this thing gets any legs or just sits idle and gets stale.

Part of me wanted to take the time to build out a custom platform from scratch because that kind of thing is fun. The rest of me pointed out that I don’t have time for that shit anymore with 15 month old twins, a move across the country to execute, and a full time job. Finding a few minutes to post a snippet of thought about any of the above is going to be hard enough as it is.
